The doors you find in Lavapiés
Lavapiés is one of the oldest and most mixed neighbourhoods in Madrid. People from all over the world live here, many renting long term, many sharing. The buildings are mostly old, and some are corralas: flats opening onto shared balconies around a courtyard.
Old buildings mean old locks. A lot of doors here have been opened and closed for many years, keys have been copied from copies, and cylinders are tired. That's why many of my calls here aren't about lost keys at all. They're about a lock that finally gives up.
Your lock is warning you: listen to it
A lock rarely fails without notice. Watch for these:
- You have to push or pull the door to get the key to turn.
- The key goes in stiffly or comes out bent.
- A copied key works "sometimes".
- The latch doesn't catch and the door bounces open.
If that sounds familiar, sort it in daylight, before it leaves you outside. Changing the bombín (the lock cylinder) is from €150. An anti-bump cylinder, harder to force, is from €200. A full lock change is from €220. Tell your landlord before changing anything: in a rented flat, it's their door.
Locked out in Lavapiés: step by step
- Safety first. If a child, an elderly person or something on the stove is inside, call 112 before anything else.
- Ask around. A flatmate, a neighbour you trust, the landlord: someone may have a spare.
- Get hold of me on +34 663 48 41 13 (call or WhatsApp). Say where you are and what the door and lock look like. A photo on WhatsApp helps.
- Agree the price. You get it on the phone, with the exact arrival time checked on Google Maps.
- Get your papers ready. ID plus your rental contract, or a letter or bill with the address.
- Once you're in, decide calmly whether the lock needs changing. No pressure.
Renting? Who pays, and the invoice
Who pays for a locksmith in a rented flat depends on your contract and on what happened: a lost key is not the same as a lock that wore out. I can't decide that for you, but I can make it easy to sort out.
You always get an invoice (factura) that says what I did, what I changed and what it cost. Send it to your landlord or agency. That's usually all they need.
If you're moving into a flat and don't know how many copies of the key are out there, a new cylinder on day one is a sensible start. Ask the landlord, and keep the invoice with your contract.
New to Spain? The words you'll hear
When you call a locksmith or talk to a landlord here, these words come up all the time:
- Portal: the street door of the building, shared by everyone.
- Cerradura: the lock.
- Bombín: the lock cylinder, the part your key goes into. Usually the part that gets changed.
- Resbalón: the latch that clicks shut when you close the door.
- Puerta blindada: an armoured door. Acorazada: a heavily reinforced one.
- Echar la llave: to lock with the key (rather than just pulling the door shut).
- Factura: an invoice. Always ask for one.
You don't need any of them with me, as we can talk in English. But they help with your landlord.
Price and how I work
Opening a door costs €150–250, call-out included. It depends on the door (standard, blindada or acorazada), the lock, whether it's on the latch or locked with the key, and distance. The price is agreed on the phone before I set off and doesn't change at the door, also at night or on Sundays.
I'm Ismael. I speak English, there's no call centre and I work 24 hours a day. On this page, tap WhatsApp and allow your location, and the message is ready with a map link to your street. Full details on the prices page. Lock already broken? Read what to do with a broken Spanish door lock.
Call, I come, I open
Call or WhatsApp me
Tell me what happened, what kind of door it is and where you are. A photo of the lock helps. Before I leave I tell you:
- The price of the opening, fixed.
- When I'll arrive, checked on Google Maps right then.
I come myself
No call centre. The person you speak to is the person who turns up.
If the door isn't what you described, I tell you before I touch anything and you decide.
I open the door
Without breaking the lock whenever possible. If it has to be broken, I explain why and ask first.
You pay what we agreed and get an invoice.
What I guarantee
The price I give is the price you pay
The opening price agreed on the phone doesn't go up when I arrive.
No parts without your OK
Cylinder, lock or reinforcement: quote first, then your yes. Say no and you only pay the opening.
Invoice, always
For every job, even at 3 a.m. You'll need it for your insurance or your landlord.

Questions people ask me
My key is getting hard to turn. Should I call a locksmith before it breaks?
Yes, it's calmer and usually cheaper than waiting until you're locked out. A new cylinder is from €150; tell your landlord first if you rent.
Who pays for a locksmith when you rent in Madrid?
It depends on your contract and the cause. I always give an invoice showing what was done, so you can settle it with your landlord.
Can a locksmith open my door if I don't have my rental contract with me?
I need to check you live there, but a contract isn't the only way: ID plus a bill or letter with the address, or the landlord on the phone, can work.
Is there a 24 hour locksmith in Lavapiés who speaks English?
Yes. I'm Ismael, I speak English and I work every day, around the clock. My number for calls and WhatsApp is +34 663 48 41 13.
