The key box is empty, or the code won't work
Plenty of flats in Chueca are rented for a weekend or a few weeks, and many use self check-in: a key box, a code, instructions by message. When it works, it's easy. When it doesn't, you're standing in the street with your luggage.
Before calling a locksmith:
- Re-read the host's message. Codes are often for the street door (the portal) and the key box separately.
- Call and message the host or the agency. Many have an emergency number.
- Check you're at the right building. Some streets here look very alike.
Still stuck? Call me. To open a tourist flat I'll need your booking confirmation and the host's OK. That rule protects you as much as the owner.
The key turns, but the door doesn't open
Many flats in the area have been renovated, and with that often came a puerta blindada (an armoured door) with a multi-point lock. They're good doors. But when something inside the lock fails, the key can turn and the door stays shut.
Signs the lock itself is failing:
- The key turns round and round with no resistance.
- The key goes in but won't turn at all.
- It's been getting harder to lock for weeks.
Don't force it with your shoulder: you can make the damage worse. Tell me exactly what happens and I'll tell you on the phone what's likely, and what it costs. A high-security lock for an armoured door is from €350, but I only change parts if you say yes.
Sometimes the problem isn't the lock but the door: it has dropped a little and the bolts rub. Then it's about adjusting, not replacing, and I'll tell you so.
Locked out in Chueca: what to do now
- If there's a child, someone vulnerable or something cooking inside, call 112 first.
- Phone me, or send a WhatsApp, on +34 663 48 41 13. If you can, add a photo of the door and the lock.
- Tell me three things: the street, the type of door, and whether you locked it with the key or it just shut behind you.
- I give you the price and the exact time I'll be there, checked on Google Maps.
- Have your ID and your contract or booking ready.
Hosts and owners in Chueca
If you rent out a flat here, your guests will one day be standing outside with no way in. You can make that easier:
- Save my number in your guest instructions. If a guest calls me, I'll still ask for your OK before opening, so they should be able to reach you or your agency.
- Keys going missing between stays? A new cylinder is from €150 and an anti-bump one from €200. Old keys stop working straight away.
- A lock that sticks is a bad review waiting to happen. Getting it changed between bookings avoids a midnight call.
You always get an invoice (factura) for the work, made out properly for your records.
What it costs
Door opening is €150–250, call-out included. A standard door shut on the resbalón (the latch) sits at the lower end. An armoured door locked with the key takes more work. Distance counts too.
You get the exact figure on the phone before I leave home, also at night or on a Sunday, and that's the price. Anything more, like a new bombín (the lock cylinder) from €150, only if you ask for it. See all prices on the prices page.
Why me
I'm a self-employed locksmith, not an agency. I speak English, I answer my own phone and I come myself, day or night. The price is agreed before I set off and you always get an invoice (factura), which hosts and insurers usually ask for.
Quick way to reach me: tap WhatsApp on this page, allow your location, and I get a Google Maps link to your door in Chueca.
Call, I come, I open
Call or WhatsApp me
Tell me what happened, what kind of door it is and where you are. A photo of the lock helps. Before I leave I tell you:
- The price of the opening, fixed.
- When I'll arrive, checked on Google Maps right then.
I come myself
No call centre. The person you speak to is the person who turns up.
If the door isn't what you described, I tell you before I touch anything and you decide.
I open the door
Without breaking the lock whenever possible. If it has to be broken, I explain why and ask first.
You pay what we agreed and get an invoice.
What I guarantee
The price I give is the price you pay
The opening price agreed on the phone doesn't go up when I arrive.
No parts without your OK
Cylinder, lock or reinforcement: quote first, then your yes. Say no and you only pay the opening.
Invoice, always
For every job, even at 3 a.m. You'll need it for your insurance or your landlord.

Questions people ask me
My Airbnb key box code isn't working in Madrid. What should I do?
First contact the host and check the code isn't for the street door. If you still can't get in, call me; I'll need your booking and the host's OK before opening.
Can you open an armoured door (puerta blindada)?
Yes. It usually takes more work than a standard door, so it sits higher in the €150–250 range. I tell you the exact price on the phone first.
The key turns but the door won't open. Is the lock broken?
Often, yes: something inside the lock has failed. Don't force the door. Call me, describe what happens and I'll tell you what it's likely to cost.
How much is an emergency locksmith in Chueca?
