Two doors between you and your bed

In Huertas, like most of old Madrid, there are usually two doors: the street door of the building (the portal) and the door of your flat. Two doors, often two different keys on the same ring. That's where the confusion starts.

Stuck at the street door

The portal belongs to the whole building. Before calling anyone, try the intercom of a neighbour or the doorman (portero) if there is one, or wait for someone to come in or out. I don't change a building's street-door lock without the building's OK.

Stuck at the flat door

That's the usual call. The door shut behind you, the key snapped or the lock jammed. That one I can sort out.

Right now: what to do

  1. Danger inside? A child, someone unwell, something on the cooker: call 112.
  2. Check you have the right key for the right door. It sounds silly, but late at night it happens.
  3. Call or WhatsApp me on +34 663 48 41 13, or tap WhatsApp on this page and allow your location, so I see exactly where you are in Huertas.
  4. You'll hear the price and when I'll arrive, checked on Google Maps.
  5. Keep your ID and your contract or booking (with the host's OK) at hand.

Latch or locked with the key? It changes the price

Opening costs €150–250, call-out included. One question matters more than most: how was the door left?

  • Pulled shut on the resbalón (the latch). Usually the simpler job, at the lower end.
  • Locked with the key, one or more turns. More work, especially on a puerta blindada (armoured door).
  • Key snapped or lock broken. I'll ask you what you see and tell you honestly what to expect.

The door type, the lock and the distance count too. I tell you the exact price on the phone before I leave, also at night or on Sundays, and that's what you pay. A new bombín (the lock cylinder) is from €150, only if you want one. All prices are on the prices page.

The Barrio de las Letras

This is the old literary quarter: narrow streets, theatres, small squares full of bars. People come for a few nights and stay in flats in old buildings, often on upper floors, up long staircases.

That shapes the calls I get here. Visitors coming back late after dinner or a show. Groups sharing one set of keys. Hosts handing over keys with quick instructions that make sense in daylight and not at midnight. If your door has an odd key or several locks, read how Spanish door locks work while you wait.

Travelling as a group? One set of keys, five people

Friends sharing a flat for a long weekend often get one set of keys, maybe two. Then someone heads back early, someone else stays out, and the keys are with the wrong person. Some simple fixes:

  • Agree who has the keys before you split up for the night.
  • Ask the host for a second set on arrival. Many have one.
  • Share the host's number with the whole group, not just the person who booked.
  • Keep the booking confirmation on more than one phone. If I need to open the door, I'll ask to see it with ID.

And if it still goes wrong, you know who to call. One phone call, one price, and the door open again.

Why call me

When you're standing on a staircase at night, you want to talk to the person who will actually come. That's me. I speak English, I work 24 hours a day, the price is agreed before I set off and you get an invoice (factura) every time.

Before I open, I check you're staying there. It takes a minute and it means nobody else can do the same with your door.

How it works

Call, I come, I open

Call or WhatsApp me

Tell me what happened, what kind of door it is and where you are. A photo of the lock helps. Before I leave I tell you:

  • The price of the opening, fixed.
  • When I'll arrive, checked on Google Maps right then.

I come myself

No call centre. The person you speak to is the person who turns up.

If the door isn't what you described, I tell you before I touch anything and you decide.

I open the door

Without breaking the lock whenever possible. If it has to be broken, I explain why and ask first.

You pay what we agreed and get an invoice.

Guarantees

What I guarantee

The price I give is the price you pay

The opening price agreed on the phone doesn't go up when I arrive.

No parts without your OK

Cylinder, lock or reinforcement: quote first, then your yes. Say no and you only pay the opening.

Invoice, always

For every job, even at 3 a.m. You'll need it for your insurance or your landlord.

FAQ

Questions people ask me

I can't open the street door of my building in Madrid. Can a locksmith help?

The street door belongs to the building, so first try a neighbour, the doorman or the host. If the problem is your flat door, call me and we'll agree the price.

How much does it cost to open a door that's only pulled shut?

It's usually at the lower end of the €150–250 range, call-out included. I confirm the exact price on the phone before I set off.

My key broke in the lock of my holiday flat. What now?

Don't try to pull the broken piece out with tools. Call me with a photo if you can, and tell the host; I'll need their OK to open.

Do you speak English?

Yes. I'm Ismael, I speak English, and I'm the one who answers the phone and comes to your door.
