Malasaña: late nights, shared flats, old stairwells

Malasaña is where a lot of people live, not just visit. Students, young workers, people here for a few months. Many share a flat, and many arrive with a single set of keys between several people.

The buildings are mostly old, with a street door (the portal), narrow stairs and, often, no lift. Flat doors vary a lot: some are the original wooden ones, others are puertas blindadas (armoured doors) fitted later.

Add bars that close late and you get the classic Malasaña call: it's the middle of the night, the keys are in another jacket, in a friend's bag or simply gone.

Lost your keys on a night out? Step by step

  1. Retrace one step, not ten. Ring the last bar or ask the friend you were with. If the keys turn up in ten minutes, great.
  2. Try your flatmates. Someone may be home or on their way. A quick message costs nothing.
  3. Ring or message me on +34 663 48 41 13. Tell me which street you're on and whether you locked the door with the key when you left or just pulled it shut.
  4. Hear the price and the time. You get both on the phone. The time is the real one, checked on Google Maps.
  5. Show you live there. ID and your rental contract, or anything with the address. In a shared flat, a flatmate on the phone can help.
  6. Decide about the lock. If the keys are lost for good, think about changing the bombín (the lock cylinder). It's from €150.

If someone inside needs help, or something is left on the hob, call 112 first.

Shared flat? A few things to know

  • Tell the landlord. If a key is lost, they'll want to know, and you'll want the invoice I give you to show what was done and what it cost.
  • Spare keys: once you're back in, get a copy cut and leave it with someone you trust nearby. It's the cheapest fix there is.
  • A stiff lock is a warning. If the key needs wiggling every night, the cylinder is wearing out. Changing it in daylight is calmer than being stuck at night.
  • Worried about who has keys? When people move out and keys don't come back, an anti-bump cylinder (from €200) gives you a fresh start. Agree it with the landlord first.

So it doesn't happen next weekend

A few small habits stop most night-time lockouts:

  • Key in your hand before the door closes. Not in your pocket, not in your bag. In your hand.
  • One place for keys at home. A hook or a bowl by the door, every time.
  • A spare with someone close by. A friend in the neighbourhood, a trusted neighbour, a flatmate's partner.
  • Separate the keys from your phone. If you lose one, you still have the other to call for help.
  • Know your door. If it locks itself when you pull it shut, treat it that way every single time.

The price, clearly

Opening a locked-out door: €150–250, call-out included. The figure depends on the type of door, the lock, whether it's on the latch or locked with the key, and the distance. I tell you the exact amount on the phone before I set off, and that's what you pay, at 4am or on a Sunday too.

Nothing extra is done without your yes. Full list on the prices page.

Why people in Malasaña call me

Because at night you want one clear voice, not a switchboard. I'm Ismael. I speak English, I answer the phone myself and I'm the one who turns up. I work 24 hours a day, I agree the price before I leave and I always give an invoice (factura).

Tip: tap WhatsApp on this page and allow your location; the message is written for you, with a Google Maps link included. Not sure how your lock works? Have a look at how Spanish door locks work.

How it works

Call, I come, I open

Call or WhatsApp me

Tell me what happened, what kind of door it is and where you are. A photo of the lock helps. Before I leave I tell you:

  • The price of the opening, fixed.
  • When I'll arrive, checked on Google Maps right then.

I come myself

No call centre. The person you speak to is the person who turns up.

If the door isn't what you described, I tell you before I touch anything and you decide.

I open the door

Without breaking the lock whenever possible. If it has to be broken, I explain why and ask first.

You pay what we agreed and get an invoice.

Guarantees

What I guarantee

The price I give is the price you pay

The opening price agreed on the phone doesn't go up when I arrive.

No parts without your OK

Cylinder, lock or reinforcement: quote first, then your yes. Say no and you only pay the opening.

Invoice, always

For every job, even at 3 a.m. You'll need it for your insurance or your landlord.

FAQ

Questions people ask me

I lost my keys on a night out in Madrid. Can a locksmith come now?

Yes, I work through the night. Call or WhatsApp +34 663 48 41 13 and I'll give you the price and the time I'll arrive before I set off.

Do I need to prove I live in the flat?

Yes, briefly. Your ID and rental contract, or something with the address, is enough. It's there to protect you and your home.

My flatmate has the only key. Should I wait or call a locksmith?

If they can get home soon, waiting is cheaper. If they're away for the night, call me and we'll agree the price before I come.

Who pays for the locksmith in a rented flat in Spain?

It depends on your contract and what happened. I give you an invoice showing exactly what I did, so you can sort it out with your landlord.
