Locked out near Sol right now? Do this
- Check for a spare key first. Is someone you're travelling with out with a key? If it's a tourist flat, message the host too. It may save you the call.
- Anyone or anything in danger inside? A child, someone unwell, a pan on the hob: call 112 first. Then call me.
- Get in touch on +34 663 48 41 13, by call or WhatsApp. Tell me the street, what the door looks like and whether it just swung shut or was locked with the key.
- Hear the price and arrival time. I'll give you the price on the phone and the exact time I'll be there, checked on Google Maps. Nothing is fixed until you say yes.
- Have your proof ready. ID plus your rental contract, or your booking confirmation and the host's OK. It's a quick check and it protects you.
- Wait somewhere comfortable. These streets are lively at almost any hour. Grab a coffee nearby and keep your phone on.
What doors are like around Sol and Gran Vía
This is the heart of the city. Most homes here sit above shops, in older blocks with a street door (the portal) and a staircase or small lift up to the flats. Many flats are tourist lets or short stays, so people are using a door they've never seen before.
You'll find everything: old wooden doors with a simple lock, and puertas blindadas (armoured doors) that owners have fitted for peace of mind. Each one opens differently, so the more you can tell me on the phone, the better.
The situations I see most here
- You pop out for five minutes and the door clicks shut on the resbalón (the latch), with the keys on the table.
- The key turns but nothing happens, or it snaps in the lock.
- Your bag goes missing in the crowds, keys and all.
- A self check-in goes wrong late at night and nobody answers.
If your keys were lost or stolen
Once you're inside, it's worth changing the bombín (the lock cylinder) so the old keys are useless. That's from €150, or from €200 for an anti-bump one. In a tourist flat, ask the host first: it's their door and their decision.
How the price works
Opening a door costs €150–250, with the call-out included. Where it falls in that range depends on four things:
- The door: standard, armoured (blindada) or reinforced (acorazada).
- The lock itself.
- Whether it's only pulled shut on the latch or locked with the key.
- How far I have to come.
I tell you the exact figure on the phone before I leave. That's what you pay, also at night or on a Sunday. If something else needs doing once the door is open, I explain it, give you the price and only do it if you say yes.
Other common jobs: cylinder change from €150, anti-bump cylinder from €200, lock change from €220. All prices are on my prices page.
Once the door is open
Getting back in is the main thing, but a couple of minutes afterwards can save you another bad night:
- Test the lock with the door open. Lock and unlock it a few times with your key so you know it works.
- Tell the host or landlord what happened. I give you an invoice (factura) listing what I did, so there's no argument later.
- Keep the key on you, not on the table. Most lockouts in this area happen when people nip out "for a second".
- Save my number. If you're in Madrid for a while, it's handy to have it before you need it.
If you'd like the lock checked or changed while I'm there, just ask. I tell you the price first and you decide.
Why call me
- I speak English. You can explain what happened without a translation app.
- No call centre. The person who picks up is the person who comes to your door.
- Price first. Agreed on the phone before I set off, so no surprises at the door.
- 24 hours, every day. Late flight, late dinner, early start: same service.
- Invoice (factura) always. Useful for your host, your landlord or your insurance.
On this page, tap WhatsApp and allow your location, and the message arrives ready with your exact spot on Google Maps. Then just add your street. If you're staying in a flat, this guide may help while you wait: locked out of an Airbnb.
Call, I come, I open
Call or WhatsApp me
Tell me what happened, what kind of door it is and where you are. A photo of the lock helps. Before I leave I tell you:
- The price of the opening, fixed.
- When I'll arrive, checked on Google Maps right then.
I come myself
No call centre. The person you speak to is the person who turns up.
If the door isn't what you described, I tell you before I touch anything and you decide.
I open the door
Without breaking the lock whenever possible. If it has to be broken, I explain why and ask first.
You pay what we agreed and get an invoice.
What I guarantee
The price I give is the price you pay
The opening price agreed on the phone doesn't go up when I arrive.
No parts without your OK
Cylinder, lock or reinforcement: quote first, then your yes. Say no and you only pay the opening.
Invoice, always
For every job, even at 3 a.m. You'll need it for your insurance or your landlord.
